Project Description

Region: South America

Country: Brazil

Location: Marau

Total Budget: $35,000

Area of Focus: Community economic development

The moment is delicate and demands the best of all and solidarity has stood out: everyone wants and certainly will help. Rotary, the City Hall of Marau, the University of Passo Fundo and the community, through their representatives and researchers, are engaged in several fronts of work aiming to meet the countless demands and thus we have a project of Economic and Community Development through the Community Culinary Cuisine. The neighborhood has social vulnerability and there is a lack of training in the area of healthy eating and solidarity economy. The organization, administration and operation of a Community Kitchen will provide a healthy space for families in this neighborhood, so that they can carry out community and solidarity practices with a view to promoting and human development. And so, they can guarantee quality of life and human dignity.

Our goal is to train vulnerable women and youth (girls and boys aged 18 to 30) in the culinary arts. Training and mentoring graduate students at the University of Passo Fundo to guide these young adults; develop and / or modify recipes using locally grown / natural foods; and teach nutrition components for improved cooking methods.

Our objectives are:

• Teach women and young adults best culinary practices, healthy eating and income generation

• Transmit skills to young adults so they have the necessary training to work in restaurants and related areas

• Favor the Solidarity Economy in the neighborhood and create a cookbook

We look for a partnership with the Rotary Club of Marau as our host club, as well as with the City Hall, University and others clubs into the nearby region, we look for clubs from other districts and club members to participate to do it. The main actions will be to enable the kitchen's physical space at the local Community Center, Marau, RS, where the necessary equipment for the complete community kitchen will be installed. With the support of the City Hall, training will be held with cooking workshops and healthy eating. As a form of income, food will be produced for the Solidarity Economy, such as: cookies, cakes, pies and typical dishes.

A booklet with recipes can also be made and some of the students after training can be absorbed by local restaurants and bars.
