WHY:
In India, about 700,000 to 800,000 people sustain significant burns every year. The highest rates occur in women 16-35 years of age. More than 50% of the patients admitted in the Hospitals with burns, lose their lives and almost every one of them suffer from excruciating pain/burning, dehydration due to fluid loss, in absence of skin protection, resulting in death. The only chance of their treatment / survival is through skin graft which will protect recipients from infection and fluid loss while promoting regeneration of their own skin.
WHAT DO WE HAVE:
At present we do not have any Skin Bank in the entire Northern Part of India, not even in the capital, and we being a part of this region the necessity of a Skin Bank is even more. This Project will help us save and enhance precious lives, reduce suffering and heal the victims through cadaver tissue donation.
BENEFIT:
Donated skin can be stored and transplanted later to aid the healing process of severe burn victims or for those who suffer from a disfiguring injury or diseases. This will protect the patients from infections and fluid loss from the body which are the two major causes of death in case of burns.
AVAILABILITY OF SKIN:
The biggest advantage is that tissues can be procured from deceased donors both in case of cardiac death and also brain death. Majority of the donated tissues can be stored up to five years. There is no age restriction to donate Skin. Almost every individual/human after death can be considered for tissue donation. Tissue banks should ensure that the donated tissue is safe and the donor's lifestyle and medical history has to be assessed at the time of donation. The best time for donation is within 24 hours after someone has passed away. Once removed, the donated tissues are transferred to tissue bank where they are examined, tested, treated, and stored until they are used or transplanted.
PURPOSE:
This Skin Bank will be of a great help in the treatment of Burn Patients and largely increase the survival rate of the patients, who once cured may move back into the main stream of the society, earn their living, support themselves as well as their families. The purpose is to help in the treatment which may result in the community development too.
ADVANTAGE:
This Tissue/Skin Bank will be established by Rotary at Sawai Man Singh Medical College and Hospital, the Rajasthan State run and owned hospital in Jaipur, Rajasthan. This Hospital, built in 1934, has a strength of 1500 doctors and 4000 nursing staff. It is a 2250 bedded hospital with 43 wards including the New 51 bedded Burn ward and ICU built in 8000sqft area. They need a Skin Bank desperately to save more lives. According to a senior plastic surgeon, if Skin Bank is developed then cadaver skin can be preserved and around 60 to 70% burn patients can be saved. The Hospital will provide us with space and complete infrastructure to set up the Tissue/Skin Bank and they will run, manage and maintain this Skin Bank on their own. Our club will form committee to monitor the functioning on a regular basis.
