Additional Info:
A community assessment carried out revealed that a thriving fishing business exist amongst the mostly poor people inhabitants of Okujagu axis of Port Harcourt. During COVID-19 lockdown, many of the fishmongers (that relied on daily sales to feed and train their families) were unable to work and lacked food and money for sustenance. In making matters worse, they were also unable to exchange their fishes for the much needed cash to survive leading mostly to a forced consumption of the fishes they had at hand, dashing away to neighbors and getting rid of rotten ones, needless to say that electricity and refrigeration is also inaccessible for these people.
The fish smoking project will therefore help beneficiaries to preserve fishes going forward and eliminate losses. This project will establish a Community-Based Micro-Industry for fish smoking by providing stainless steel smoking facilities, water and sanitation facility and other accessories ancillary to the business.
