With this pandemic (COVID-19) ravaging the world, it is important that we all observe the stated precautions by governments and medical experts. One of these precautions; "regular hand washing/sanitizing with clean water and soap", is what we believed, as a club, that can be easily practised, particularly in a rural area like in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta state, Nigeria, where we found ourselves.
This precautionary measure, if done manually, can result to further transmission of diseases from one person to another because it will involve touching of bowl (to fetch water) and soap to rub the hand for washing. To this end, there is need to design a simple machine that can perform effectively hand washing and sanitising, without the users touching anything.
Three (3) of these Hand washing/sanitising machines is intended to be located in twenty (20) public primary/secondary schools in Aniocha-South Local Government Area of Delta State. If actualised, it will go along way to prevent further disease transmission amongst students (pupils) and teachers.
This machine is made up of a plastic water tank, three foot-pedal actuating mechanisms for the release of water flow, liquid soap and sanitiser consecutively. The user is expected to apply foot pressure on one pedal at a time, starting with that of the water flow to the liquid soap, and after dryness of hands, to that of sanitiser. This machine can be locally fabricated in Ogwashi-uku, Delta State. This project can be completed in three (3) months, with a cost of $600 per machine.
The project funds would solely be used for the procurement of materials, complete fabrication of machines and transportation of machines to selected schools. My club members, particularly, Club foundation and Club project committees, would be fully involved in the project execution.
