Areas of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene, Community economic development
Ghana clean water project GG-20-11510 will drill nineteen new boreholes and build 62 household Microflush toilets in Ghana. Our goal is to provide communities with clean water and sanitation in poor communities in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. We will implement small-town water systems for two communities and will repair one borehole. We will provide 80 micro-credit loans for boreholes, Microflush toilets, farms and small businesses to improve the economic strength of two communities and reduce the impact of the coronavirus. The project funding goal is $131,922 to impact more than 15,000 lives. The communities impacted are in the Obuasi area near Kumasi, Ghana.
The goal is to focus on some of the following districts: Obuasi Metropolitan and Akrofuom District Assemblies. The Microflush toilets will dramatically improve the health and hygiene of not only those using the toilets but also those who use the neighboring water supplies by reducing contamination that spreads diseases and providing a sustainable closed cycle system that provides local farmers fertilizer for their crops and gardens.
This project will be assisted through in-kind contributions from the communities in the form of local labor, local funding, local leadership, and the use of existing local infrastructure, assistance in implementation and project monitoring, and management and handling of water supply finances. By providing clean and accessible water, this grant will give much-needed support to existing community initiatives and yield enduring and impactful results as it has in the past. With your support we can give these communities the means to sustain themselves in a healthy environment.
We trained Microflush toilet makers in the Ashanti Region during our past global grants. Now, we want to provide funding so that their businesses can grow. Our goal is to provide loans in two loan cycles spanning two six-month periods.
Our system of developing solutions locally with community input aims to empower communities that demonstrate the initiative to self-improvement, but these projects can only be achieved with your assistance.
Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
