Noor Medicare Hospital

(A Project of Medicare Health Foundation& RC Lahore Sharqi East, RD-3272 Pakistan)

.

Lahore is a one of the largest cities of Pakistan, and comes with its burden of urban slums.Private medical care is unaffordable for the poor, and government hospitals are swarming with patients, due to the scarcity of beds and resources to effectively manage treatment. As a result, many patients there are left without proper care, as even medicines are not available most of the time. Furthermore, the incidence of unsafe birth in Pakistan is on the rise, with untrained birth attendants putting the life of the mother and child at great risk. It is no wonder why maternal and infant mortality in Pakistan are dangerously high, at 276/100,000 live births and 61/1000 live births respectively (UNICEF, 2017). Urban slums are a big contribution to this figure, and hence there is a great need for hospitals offering good quality care at affordable rates.

.

In this scenario, Rotary Club of Lahore Sharqi (East), along with some friends and family members, set out in the year 2000 to provide good quality healthcare in underprivileged communities, especially in maternal and child care and as a result, Medicare Health Foundation was established (as Medicare Trust, as back then we were registered under the Trust Act 1882; we had to change our name after being registered at Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) under Section 42 of the Non-Profit Act).

.

Our philosophy is that we do not refuse treatment to anyone, merely because he is unable to pay. Our services are already at very low rates, but even then we provide further discounts/free services to those who are not able to pay.

.

With an emphasis on Mother and Child Healthcare, initially our slogan was "Ensuring Safe Birth" in underprivileged communities.

.

In the year 2004, we opened the doors to our first hospital in the downtrodden community of BadamiBagh, Lahore. Functional for over 15 years now, this hospital offers a wide range of services, including General Out-Patient Clinics, Antenatal Consultancy, In-PatientGyne and Obstetrics Services, Dental Clinic, Pathology Lab, X-Ray Services, and Specialist Medical care.

.

Over the years, our organizational structure became more sophisticated, and we gathered the wherewithal to establish another medical facility in the poverty stricken area of Shadbagh, Lahore in the year 2016. This is a two bedded normal delivery centre, where highly trained and skilled nurses operate under the close monitoring of our hospital in BadamiBagh.

.

In the year 2018, we inaugurated another hospital located in the impoverished community along the main Ferozepur Road in Lahore, called "Noor Medicare Hospital".

.

This place, originally a dispensary, was donated to us and we reconstructed it into a hospital offering a number of services including Gyne and Obs, Pediatrics, Pathology Lab, Dental Clinic and Specialist care. It has a heavy flow of patients, and our learnings from our past experience are that we need to expand our scope of services to cater to the increasing medical needs of patients. Hence, at Noor Medicare, we have introduced a number of in-patient services including Orthopedic Surgeries, Laparoscopic Surgeries and General Surgeries. Our Out-Patient Department has a number of specialties, including Dental Clinic, Ultrasound, General/Specialist clinics and Free Vaccination for Children under the Expanded Program for Immunization (EPI) by the Government of Punjab.

.

For this we realized that we need additional space to cater to the growing patient body, and in February 2019, we decided to add another floor to our presently double storied building, and create state of the art new patient wards there. The expense incurred in this additional construction was funded by our members and donors.

.

Noor Medicare Hospital is in need of essential medical equipment to serve the growing demand for specialist medical care. The poverty stricken population living in communities along Ferozepur Road and adjacent areas will be the main beneficiaries, as we will be able to cater to their growing medical needs at subsidized rates, also providing them discounted rates/free of cost treatment if they are unable to afford our already low rates.

.

We look forward to a Global Grant to complete this project. The total budgetary cost is around US$ 45,000, Members of our Club would be contributing about US$ 5,000 and we hope that another US$ 3,000 would be contributed out of the DDF of District 3272. We look forward for the help from Rotarians and Rotary Districts in shape of individual donations / DDF for this Global Grant.
