Project Description

Region: South America

Country: Peru

Location: Chincha

Total Budget: $50,000

Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment

In 2013 a mammographer was donated by Rotary Club Lima Sunrise to the polyclinic built and managed by the Peruvian American Medical Society (PAMS), after an earthquake in 2007 hit hard the Ica region in Peru. Since then, the number of low income patients that attend this med center has increased considerably, as it offers various specialized treatments public hospitals do not have. This includes mammographies for the female population; but the mammographer is not digital and right now exams have to be sent to Lima for interpretation. Public hospitals have shown an interest in sending their large female population to the polyclinic, but the 2 week process has been a deterrent. Patients in need of a mammography urgently, have to travel to Lima. Management at the Polyclinic has already contacted suppliers who offer digital equipment compatible with the existing mammographer, has all the technical information and estimates. This equipment would speed up the results for early diagnosis in a country where the 2nd cause of death amongst women is breast cancer, 4 women die everyday of breast cancer and 85% of cases are diagnosed at an advance stage.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
