The main objective of this project is to purchase needed medical laboratory equipment for Madonna Hospital which serves a primarily rural population of approximately 1 million people. Madonna Hospital has recently achieved Tertiary Status which means that it offers three specialty services: Ophthalmology, Orthopedics and Surgery. The hospital staff hopes to add Maternal Child services in the near future.

With these specialty services, Madonna Hospital staff is treating more patients and the staff needs better diagnostic tools. The majority of the lab tests are currently being done manually which is very time consuming and labor intensive. Automated laboratory equipment will provide rapid and accurate test results to enhance the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

This project will purchase a 3 part differential hematology analyzer, a semi-automated chemistry analyzer, an electrolyte analyzer, a hematocrit centrifuge, a table top centrifuge with 12 buckets, a 6 month supply of reagents, a water filtration system, a surge protector, training of the staff and a 3 year maintenance contract.

This project will assist the staff of Madonna Hospital to provide better care for over 430 patients per month and over 5,100 patients per year. The cost of purchasing the laboratory equipment, installation, calibration, quality control, training of the staff, a three year maintenance contract and contingency fund for currency fluctuation is $59,714. The completion date of the project is 12/31/2021.

The Rotary Club of Umuahia will be the primary contact on the grant. They will partner with Rev. Fr. Dr. Christian Anokwuru (hospital administrator) to have the purchased equipment installed and calibrated, train the staff and plan a community celebration in Umuahia, Abia State, Nigeria.

The Rotary Club of Ft. Collins Breakfast will assist with fundraising and community outreach to US clubs. Cindy Cloyd hopes to make a visit to Nigeria in 2021 to Madonna Hospital to observe the hospital staff using the new laboratory equipment.

In February 2021, the laboratory equipment was delivered, installed and calibrated. The laboratory staff was trained in the use and maintenance of the equipment.

The number of hematology tests run by the laboratory has exceeded the estimated projections. From February 1, 2021-July 28,2021, 970 patients received full blood counts. This a 3 fold increase above the projected estimate. The number of chemistry tests completed in the same time frame is much closer to the projected number.

Two shipments of reagents have been sent to the hospital laboratory, providing enough reagents for 12 months. One more shipment will be sent in February 2022. After that shipment, Madonna Hospital will purchase its own reagents.

The Rapid Chemistry Analyzer and the Hematology Analyzer stopped functioning and were successfully repaired by Swiss Biostadt in early 2022. The Rapid Chemistry Analyzer needed new electrodes and the Hematology Analyzer had blood clots in the tubing which were removed. The laboratory equipment is now functioning properly.

The reagent order originally scheduled for February 2022 was delayed because two pieces of equipment were awaiting repair. The final order of reagents that will be paid by the Grant will be submitted by mid June. All future reagent orders will be paid by Madonna Hospital.

Preventive maintenance visits will be provided by Swiss Biostadt through the end of December 2025. The Grant will remain active until the preventive maintenance contract is completed.

The Rapid Chemistry Analyzer has had recurrent problems with the electrodes and it has been returned to Swiss Biostadt. Negotiations are underway to replace the Rapid Chemistry Analyzer with a new Analyzer. The other laboratory equipment is functioning properly.

The final order of reagents paid by the Grant was delivered in July 2022. All future reagent orders will be paid for by Madonna Hospital.

Preventive maintenance service visits will be provided by Swiss Biostadt through the end of December 2025. The Grant will remain active until the preventive maintenance contract is completed.

The Rapid Chemistry Analyzer remains inoperable and negotiations are underway with Swiss Biostadt to replace the Rapid Chemistry Analyzer with a new Analyzer from a different manufacturer.

The Hematology Analyzer has been inoperable since Dec 2022. Despite concerted efforts on our part (the hospital administrator and I) requesting a repair visit, Swiss Biostadt has not repaired the analyzer. We are continuing to press Swiss Biostadt to make the repair.

Three preventive maintenance service visits will be provided by Swiss Biostadt through the end of December 2023. Beginning Jan. 1, 2024, we plan to terminate the contract with Swiss Biostadt due to poor customer service.

The Grant will remain active until the preventive maintenance contract is completed in Dec. 2025 with a new company.

19-Mar-24

by Cynthia Cloyd

Swiss Biostadt has agreed to replace the Rapid Chemistry Analyzer. We are waiting to receive the invoice for the replacement analyzer. The Preventive Maintenance contract with Swiss Biostadt was not renewed in 2024 due to poor customer service. A similar Preventive Maintenance contract was initiated with Excel Biomedical and Wellness Ltd. for 2024 at a cost savings.

The Grant will remain active until the Preventive Maintenance contract is completed in December 2025.
