Communal Sanitation Facility

Problem Statement

Several years ago during a Coastal Cleanup activity, several of our members initiated an informal dialogue among a number of residents in the area in which we raised concern about the seemingly unsanitary practices of human waste disposal that was rampant in the areas. We discovered that the cause was because almost every house in the area did not have their own toilet, mainly because the residents were poor and did not see the need to spend money on constructing toilets for their homes and families.

We then initiated other talks with the local village head or Barangay Chairman and councilors as well as other leaders to implement our plan of solving their problem and providing for their needs. When our first Public Toilet was constructed, the local community pledged their support by religiously maintaining the facility.

This project also supports the Local and National Government's programs especially the "Clean and Green Program" which is an integral activity of every Barangay in the Philippines

These Public Toilets will help address the needs of the community by providing them with facilities where they can properly dispose of their human wastes in the proper and sanitary way. As our studies had previously seen, the residents would usually dump and dispose of their excreta just about anywhere they pleased...in their backyards, along the beaches, in the nearby rivers and into the surrounding sea. These facilities will help put an end to these unsanitary and environmentally-degrading practices and more importantly will bring a semblance of discipline and humanity among the residents.

This Project hopes to directly provide for the needs of around 2,000 residents of the said areas and our hope is that this project, once implemented and completed will help bring about a better and healthier future for our beneficiaries.

The Club has identified the following areas (communities) in need of these facilities:

1. Brgy. Manggalang Kiling, Sariaya, Quezon

2. Sitio Tangkil, Brgy. Castanas, Sariaya, Quezon

3. Brgy. Talaan, Sariaya, Quezon

4. Eco-tourism Road, Brgy. Guis-Guis Talon, Sariaya, Quezon

5. Brgy. Sampaloc 2, Sariaya, Quezon

6. Brgy. Guis-guis, Sariaya, Quezon

7. Brgy. Bignay 2, Sariaya, Quezon

8. Brgy. Bignay 1, Sariaya, Quezon

Detail how the project will address these community needs

These Public Toilets will help address the needs of the community by providing them with facilities where they can properly dispose of their human wastes in the proper and sanitary way. As our studies had previously seen, the residents would usually dump and dispose of their excreta just about anywhere they pleased...in their backyards, along the beaches, in the nearby rivers and into the surrounding sea. These facilities will help put an end to these unsanitary and environmentally-degrading practices and more importantly will bring a semblance of discipline and humanity among the residents.

Goals

1. Providing equitable community access to safe water, improved sanitation and hygiene

2. Strengthening the ability of communities to develop, fund and maintain sustainable water and sanitation systems

3. Supporting programs that enhance communities awareness of the benefits of safe water, sanitation and hygiene.

Meeting these goals

The goals will be met by first providing the community with the necessary resolve, education, information and training so that their previous unsanitary and unhealthy practices will be eradicated and changed for the better. This will then help them to properly care and provide fro the upkeep of the facilities to ensure that the future generations will also benefit.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
