Rotary Club: College Project Title: Music in the Garden 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? We supported the UAF Music in the Garden series of 12 concerts taking place one night a week in the Georgeson Botanical Gardens. Two bands perform for one hour each on Thursday evenings during the summer. These events are very well attended, rain, smoke or shine! In addition, members of College Rotary walk through the audience with watering cans to collect donations to benefit the garden. 2. How many people benefited from this project? The 24 different bands as well as 500-1000/night in the audience. 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? The primary beneficiaries were the members of our community who attended the concerts. Approximately 500-1,000 people attended the concerts every Thursday night for 12 weeks during the summer. This is a time of community and family. Multi-generational families attend; military personnel attend; town & gown attend. The setting is gorgeous, and the evenings provide a peaceful setting to relax and forget troubles. Music has a positive effect on mental health. It calms people. In all the years I've attended these concerts I have never seen an angry or unhappy person. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 24+ 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. At least two Rotarians walked through the audience carrying watering cans to collect donations for the garden. This provided Rotary with significant visibility during twelve concerts throughout the summer. Rotarians have also helped with set up of garden booth and the Stars of Gold Readers table where books are available at no cost to children. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? N/A 7. Income
