Building on the success of a project previously funded jointly by the La Jolla Rotary Club and a Rotary District Grant, the Club seeks renewed support to continue and expand its proven partnership with the Walter Munk Foundation for the Oceans and the Mount Soledad National Veterans Memorial.
For the past five years, this program has provided students from underserved communities with direct, hands-on experiences in San Diego's coastal environment, helping them understand how their actions affect watershed and ocean health. Students visit Mount Soledad to learn how runoff and waste travel from inland areas to the ocean. They then continue to La Jolla Shores and the Walter Munk Ocean Discovery Plaza, where they explore ocean conservation through interactive science activities and learn about the cultural history of the Kumeyaay people.
This grant will support the funding of the development, production, and distribution of an updated series of Rotary-branded educational booklets and notebooks. These materials will reinforce the concepts introduced during the field experiences, allowing students to deepen their understanding, continue discussions in their classrooms, and develop a lasting commitment to environmental stewardship. Continued Rotary support will broaden the reach and lasting impact of this successful program.
