Our Club will purchase complete Thanksgiving meals from a local Escondido restaurant and deliver those meals to needy seniors in various mobilehome parks and senior living apartments throughout Escondido on Thanksgiving Day. This has been a Club tradition for approximately 20 years. Prior to Thanksgiving, our Club Members communicate with local low income housing mobilehome park managers, and senior living apartment complexes managers, to identify some needy seniors who may not have any family. A local Escondido restaurant, Mikki's Cafe, prepares a full Thanksgiving meal and packages such meal. On Thanksgiving Day we have the freshly made meals all ready to go and our Members show up at the restaurant, pick up the meals, and deliver them to the seniors homes. We further have students from the local Early Childhood Development School prepare Happy Thanksgiving cards to include in the packages we drop off to the seniors. We typically deliver between 150-175 full thanksgiving meals. Each Member delivers a handful (usually 4-7 by each Member) of meals to different seniors, and gets to often spend a few moments chatting with the senior when delivering their meal. The seniors are always so happy and thankful to have someone show up and to even get a Thanksgiving meal that they may not have otherwise had. This serves a need to support seniors in our community, especially those that are low income or may not have family. They feel seen and a part of the community. This project takes about two months, in the contacting of the park managers and apartment managers to identify the seniors, then to organize the delivery day and the addresses of where the Members where be delivering meals to. The project will be completed on Thanksgiving Day. It is very common to have our Members and many of their families (kids, grandkids, etc) participate in making the deliveries and interacting with the seniors. The funds will be used to purchase the meals that will be delivered.
