Project Description

Country: USA

Location: San Diego, CA

Total Budget: $6,000

Area of Focus: Community economic development

Activity Type: Community Development: General

Summary: At least ten transitioning foster youth adults provided with basic emergency needs such as covering rent, groceries or bus passes preventing homelessness and job loss in San Diego County, California, United States.

The Just In Time for Foster Youth mission is to engage a caring community to help transition aged-out foster youth age 18-26 to achieve self-sufficiency and well-being. Emergency basic needs service is often the first hand extended and JIT's fastest growing need. When a young adult is just one payment away from eviction, one empty refrigerator away from crisis or one broken-down car from losing a job, Just In Time for Foster Youth steps in "just in time." In FY2025 they served 273 young adults through 655 assists, investing $353,513 to keep youth housed, fed, and moving toward their goals. They expect that need to hold steady through FY2026 and into FY2027, because the pressures these young people face aren't easing. San Diego's housing costs run 123% above the national average.

The contribution from the Rotary Club of Santee-Lakeside will go straight to young adults in crisis, covering rent that prevents an eviction, groceries that carry someone through a hard week, or a bus pass that keeps them showing up to work. None of it will go to administrative costs. This grant alone can stabilize 10+ young people at the exact moment needed. It's a small amount of financial assistance, that will help keep transition age youth moving forward towards creating a bright future and out of homelessness.

91% of JIT alumni report breaking the cycle of foster care. A safety net today becomes a career, a home, and a future tomorrow.
