Across Liberia, thousands of students live in homes without reliable electricity. When darkness falls, learning often stops. Many students rely on candles, kerosene lamps, or mobile phone flashlights to complete homework and prepare for examinations. Others simply cannot study at all.
Through the BENDIS Project, 1,000 students will receive durable, solar-powered reading lights that will allow them to study safely and effectively after sunset. The project will improve educational outcomes, reduce dependence on unsafe lighting sources, and provide students with greater opportunities to succeed academically. The project includes working with a participating organization (Destiny Hands International Inc.), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit located in San Diego, California which has first-hand knowledge of the educational needs and is able to perform an on-site verification of the project completion. The project timeline is from July 2026 through March 2027.
Who will carry out the project / Budget summary:
The sponsoring club Rotarians will be involved in project planning and promotion, logistics and distributions. The sponsoring club will specifically provide a sum of US$1,000 in addition to its DDF for this project. The amount will underwrite portion of a one-time cost of the solar-powered reading lights. The partnering organization(s) will underwrite the balance total cost of the remaining line items for this project including but not limited to shipment, training, transportation, and miscellaneous expenses. The collaborating organization(s), with assistance from its affiliating local Liberian organization, will coordinate and carry out the project and will be responsible for any future maintenance needs.
