Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Kearney

Total Budget: $670

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Food/Agriculture: General

Summary: Funds to help support the Kearney High School agriculture's GAP project to improve the quality of programs and services at KHS.

KHS is the first high school in Nebraska to employ three full-time agriculture teachers to meet the high demand from students to explore and develop their interests in agriculture. These teachers instruct 600 students and guide nearly 100 FFA members through a sequence of agriculture courses focusing on animal and plant science, agribusiness, and natural resources. Students studying agriculture at KHS have gone on to become farmers/ranchers, agriculture teachers, agronomists, mechanics, animal researchers, and wildlife management specialists. To maintain and improve the quality of programs and services at KHS, the teachers developed the GAP project. GAP will address equipment needs at KHS. These needs include:

- Floricooler- Used in floriculture classes to preserve floral bouquets and plants- $1,800.

- Grow Cart- Two portable carts with lights and watering system used in plant science classes to grow plants used in the classes- $2,800.

- Animal Models- Used in animal science classes, these models will present a 3-0 perspective of the anatomy of canines, chickens, and suturing and spaying animals- $3,395.

A contribution to GAP will help prepare KHS students to be the professionals and leaders agriculture needs to meet the challenges of agriculture's future.

Our Rotary District Grant Fund would more than likely goes towards their animal science needs as those costs fit better into the dollar amount we can contribute. The following shows the list of what they hope to acquire.
