Community Development Projects Inc., doing business as Project Mercy Baja ("Project Mercy") is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of impoverished families in Mexico through the construction of safe housing and the development of sustainable communities. Project Mercy's mission is to improve the basic living standards and quality of life for families who live in conditions precarious to their health in the shantytowns of the colonias east of Tijuana, Mexico. Project Mercy replaces unsafe makeshift shelters with solid, basic homes and sanitary pit latrines for families living in extreme poverty.
Many of the people living in these makeshift shelters are newly arrived families seeking economic opportunity and stability for a better future for their children. They often live in overcrowded settlements lacking proper sanitation, drainage, and protection from harsh environmental conditions. Dirt-floor shacks offer little defense from heat, wind, rain, or vermin, creating serious health and safety concerns.
Project Mercy constructs approximately 75 permanent dwellings in the Tijuana and Tecate areas of Baja a year. Through a collaborative "sweat equity" model, recipient families actively participate in preparing building sites, laying foundations, and assisting volunteer teams during construction. Volunteer groups from the United States fund and build these homes at a cost of approximately $8,000 each, supported by experienced team leaders and skilled local construction workers. Members of the Rancho Santa Fe Rotary will be able to assist in the construction of the home they fund.
Each home measures 16' x 20' (360 sq. ft) with a sleeping loft area and includes:
Solid wood-frame construction
Concrete foundation slab
Four windows
Steel-lined exterior door with lockset
Carpeting in the sleeping loft
Drywall
Painted interior and exterior walls
While basic, these homes provide safety, improved health conditions, dignity, and stability for families in need.
