Boise Centennial Rotary has chosen literacy as its core platform. We know Boise has strong literacy programs across schools, libraries, and nonprofit organizations. However, many families are not aware of these resources or may face barriers accessing them.
Common barriers include:
* lack of awareness of available programs
* language barriers
* limited time to search for resources
* uncertainty about how to support reading at home.
As a result, the most valuable role for a community organization may not be creating additional programs but helping families discover and access the resources already available to them. Given Boise's existing literacy infrastructure, BCR could contribute in several ways.
Promote literacy resources
BCR could help families learn about existing literacy programs through schools, community organizations, and Rotary networks.
Strengthen partnerships
BCR could collaborate with organizations such as libraries, schools, and literacy nonprofits to expand the reach of their programs.
Support book access
Providing books or literacy materials to families can help strengthen reading habits at home.
Increase visibility around literacy
Public literacy events and awareness campaigns can encourage families to engage with reading programs.
Goals:
* BCR will partner with existing literacy programs to create printed and digital materials to promote programs.
* BCR will develop partnerships with existing programs and local businesses to create collaborative programming to support the work being done in our community.
* BCR will, whenever possible, provide books and learning materials to families to strengthen the work at home. All materials will be available in multiple languages to better serve our immigrant populations.
* BCR will collaborate with literacy groups to create two events in the next year to promote existing programs with one of those events targeting adult literacy campaigns.
How Rotarians Will Support:
*Provide volunteer service hours to existing organizations who need additional support.
*Work within existing organizations to discover unmet needs and work toward solutions.
*Deliver marketing materials and resources where needed and appropriate.
