The Dream Garden is an existing community garden that serves as a gathering space, a source
of fresh food, and an educational resource. While the garden has shown what is possible, it
currently lacks the infrastructure to maximize its productivity and long-term sustainability. Specifically:
• There are no established fruit trees to provide reliable perennial harvests. Project funds will establish a productive fruit orchard within the Dream Garden.
• Soil health and amendment systems are inadequate for optimal plant production in this
high-desert climate. Project funds will allow for purchase of quality soil amendments to support fruit tree establishment and overall garden productivity
• There is no dedicated composting system to recycle organic matter and build soil fertility
over time. Project funds will install a proper composting system.
• Medicinal and culturally significant herbs, including those used in traditional Navajo teas, are not yet systematically represented in the garden. Project funds will be used to establish a dedicated garden section for culinary herbs and plants used for traditional Navajo teas.
This project is a small segment of Chinle Planting Hope, a non-profit NGO working with volunteers from numerous Rotary Clubs in Colorado and Arizona to improved overall living conditions on the Navajo Nation in and around Chinle, AZ. Project funds will enable purchase of supplies once received from District 5495. Flagstaff Rotarians will provide labor to install these Dream Garden improvements by or before June 30, 2027. Beneficiaries of this project include all residents of the Navajo Nation in and around Chinle, AZ.
