Rotary District 5790, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Belen, Costa Rica (District 4240),and a matching challenge from Rotary District 5730 requests grant funding to procure and distribute a total of 520 customized wheelchairs to mobility-impaired individuals who are not able to purchase one.
This project scales a highly successful, 20-year humanitarian initiative by Belen Rotary that has already delivered nearly 10,000 wheelchairs across Costa Rica. Leveraging a 50% matching fund agreement with the non-profit Wheelchair Foundation, this collaborative effort will deploy two full ocean cargo containers (260 wheelchairs each) for delivery to Costa Rica March 2027. This grant will directly eliminate physical isolation, foster economic independence, and provide immediate relief to families burdened by the physical and financial tolls of immobility.
This initiative offers an exceptional return on investment (ROI) for grant donors due to a highly efficient cost-sharing model:
•The 50% Philanthropic Match: Because The Wheelchair Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit, they will match all funds raised by Rotary districts dollar-for-dollar (a 50% fund reduction per container). District 5790 needs to raise only $28,000 through DDF and club/individual donations.
