Project Description

Location: Baker County

Total Budget: $6,000

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: This literacy project supports students in Baker and surrounding Counties in Eastern Oregon, by providing books & reading to students, strengthening library programs in Santiago, Chile, and enhancing literacy initiatives at the Baker County Library.

Baker City Rotary has identified a clear need to strengthen literacy access and engagement for children and families in Baker County and to support Rotary‑aligned literacy initiatives internationally. Local schools report limited budgets for new children's books, the Baker County Library [Baker County Community Literacy Coalition] continues to face high demand for youth literacy programming, and our partner Jackson Pippert [Founder and Program Director] of Lucha de Libros has requested support for library capacity and reading‑engagement program

1]Rotary Ideals Literacy Project (Fairborn, OH): Baker City Rotary will purchase children's books from this Rotary‑run program and distribute them to elementary schools across Baker County-including public, private, and charter schools-to support classroom reading, Rotary volunteer read‑aloud and take‑home books.

2]Lucha de Libros - Santiago, Chile: Funds will help strengthen library resources and support team‑based reading competitions that build comprehension, confidence, and a culture of reading among youth in underserved communities.

3]Baker County Library Programs [Baker County Community Literacy Coalition]: Support will expand local literacy programming, including early‑reader materials, Rotary youth engagement activities, and Rotary community reading events that reach families throughout the county.

Timeline:

July-November 2026: Finalize book orders, coordinate with Baker County schools, and confirm needs with the Baker County Library and Lucha de Libros partners.

November-March 2027: Distribute books to schools; launch volunteer reading sessions; provide funding to Lucha de Libros for library strengthening and reading competitions.

October-May 2027: Support Baker County Library literacy programs, monitor progress, and gather feedback from teachers, librarians, and partner organizations.

May 2027: Complete reporting, evaluate outcomes, and prepare next‑year recommendations.

Use of Funds:

Grant funds will be used to purchase children's books, support library materials and reading‑competition resources for Lucha de Libros and enhance literacy programming at the Baker County Library. No funds will be used for travel or administrative expenses.

Club Member Involvement:

Someone other than the incoming club president needs to be the project manager. Please designate another club member as the primary contact person. Both of you will have administrative permissions to work on the grant application. This is a tier 3 project requiring a detailed spending plan. Your description of costs in the narrative is too vague, needing to include quantities of specific items and their costs. The committee wants to know why your asking for this much money, and the detailed spending plan shows us you have done your due diligence. All this needs to be completed in your application and signed by June 1st. Thank you!

For future grant requests, please choose one location, rather than 2 different countries. We will allow this application to go through to the RI Foundation for final approval this time. I will let you know when you can start working on this project.
