Summary: This project will provide food for students at the Long Beach City College and CSULB school pantries.
The goal of this project is to help food insecure students at California State University Long Beach and Long Beach City College. For many of our students, this is defined as not being confident of their next meal. When we began this project 6 years ago, food insecure students was estimated at 21% to 24% at both schools. Today, both our recent experience with COVID-19 as well as other economic issues have placed this number at closer to 40% for both schools. Our club purchases food and hygiene products for the schools at two events: LBCC in August (prior to their school year starting) and CSULB in January (during their Winter session). Our club members gather for these two events, sort the products and pack them in string bags for easy distribution to the students. Last year we filled 1500 bags (750 at each school location).
