Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Phoenix, Arizona

Total Budget: $5,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: 10 at-risk students from Phoenix, AZ area high schools will attend a 10 week course called Level Up Academy.

The mission of New Pathways for Youth is to transform young lives by providing support, stability, and skills they need to flourish within their families and communities.

New Pathways for Youth targets under resourced youth with multiple Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE's) experiencing significant challenges, such as poverty, unsafe environments, and barriers to academic and economic success in low-income, high risk Phoenix AZ neighborhoods. This is accomplished by enrolling students in Level Up Academy and matching them with an adult mentor. Relationships with mentors are carefully matched, actively supported, and sustained over time-creating the conditions where growth can take root and continue.

Level Up Academy is a 10-week course that is an introduction to the skills/mindsets students need to thrive in high school and beyond. Offered as an elective high school course - open to all students in grades 9-12 in partner schools, Level Up Academy will be delivered twice a week as part of students' regular school schedule and facilitated by an experienced instructor who will provide guidance and support to students. Outcomes for youth (derived from pre/post surveys): 90% will develop positive adult relationships; 90% will increase Social Emotional Learning Competencies; 90% will increase personal, professional, and academic aspirations.

Funding from the Rotary Club of Scottsdale North and District Grant funds will help pay for 10 students' enrollment in Level Up Academy at a cost of $500 per student.

Rotarians of Rotary Club of Scottsdale North will participate in this project by preparing the grant with the recipient and shepherding through the grant process. RCSN Rotarians will follow up with Level Up Academy to get feedback from students who have completed the 10-week course.

Publicity will involve posting information and pictures on the RCSN various social media channels regarding funding for Level Up Academy and this District Grant.
