Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Pocatello

Total Budget: $2,500

Area of Focus: Community economic development

Activity Type: Community Development: Construction/Renovation

Summary: Procure and installed flashing light signs at a dangerous crosswalk

Our 2026-27 project request is to subsidize flashing lighted crosswalk signs near the New Day Products and Resources building in Pocatello for employee and visitor safety. The annotated diagram shows the proposed location and signs.

For over 50 years, New Day's mission has been to help people in Southeast Idaho with developmental and other disabilities to find employment and access to resources. http://www.newdayproducts.org/wp/. News coverage https://www.idahostatejournal.com/townnews/welfare/new-day-products-resources-celebrates-50-years-of-service/article_1b78629c-475e-11ee-9e6a-f390f1eae699.html The demand for disabled person opportunities has grown so New Day now supports 150 people.

Solar-powered wireless crosswalk lights enhance pedestrian safety using solar energy to power LED flashing signs or beacons, often utilizing wireless radio communication for synchronized activation without complex wiring. These systems use push-buttons or sensors to activate flashing lights on both sides of the road, improving visibility up to 2,500 feet. The location is dangerous because the North Main one-way speed limit increases from 35 to 50 MPH just north of the New Day building so drivers anticipate acceleration and are not watching for pedestrians.

Nominal cost for a set of two 12 foot signs is $2,500. City of Pocatello can install the signs. Other financial and technical support is arranged for the New Day project if actual costs exceed the $2,500 estimate. Planned completion in 2026.

Pocatello Centennial Rotary Club subsidized multiple sets of flashing lighted crosswalk signs near Idaho State University in 2023. These were funded in a collaboration between Rotary, the City of Pocatello, and other businesses.

Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)

Addendum: Pocatello Centennial Rotary Club hands-on activity will be similar to the Peace Pole project P-5524. The club team of 5-7 members will coordinate with City of Pocatello traffic engineers to source the best value crosswalk sign system and when received assemble and test the components. Where approved, mark installation locations, masonry-drill and earth-auger holes for the sign poles, install and fill with approved material, test final installation and arrange project publicity with commercial and social media. The club team will arrange funding for any costs beyond the P-6058 estimate.
