Safe Harbor is a RuralCap-operatred transitional housing facility for families working to move from homelessness to self-sufficiency in the Muldoon area of Anchorage.
Services are offered to help parents improve life skills, obtain employment, and maintain healthy life styles. The on-site Little Haven daycare facility allows them to work and run needed errands while not worrying about their children.
Safe Harbor currently has about 190 residents, including over 100 children.
Safe Harbor has been working to create a playground for their residents. They have leveled the ground and installed fencing. They are seeking significant funds for permanent playground equipment , but that will take significant funding, time, and effort. In the interim, Sane Harbor has asked Gateway Rotary to help with procurement of suitable portable playground equipment (Little Tykes, Fisher Price or equivalent) and outdoor games (balls, nets, etc.) that could be used this summer.
This grant request proposes that Gateway Rotary will partner with Safe Harbor to supply funds through a grant for purchasing playground equipment and supplies. These items will be able to be used even after the permanent playground is later installed and will be stored in a shed when not in use.
Gateway Rotary members will help build the portable playground equipment.
The outdoor play equipment will ignite kids to play while enticing their imagination, and getting them out of their small rooms and limited indoor space.
The grant funds would be given to Safe Harbor to procure play equipment as they deem fit as they have connections for more favorable pricing than Gateway could get.
