The equipment used in the outdoor experience programs, primarily camping and fishing gear, requires regular repairs or replacement, which is an annual expense for the program. The number of camps and the number of participants that can be served are dependent upon each year's available funding, as well as the availability of equipment.
The grant funds will be used for needed equipment repairs and replacement after the 2026 summer season, and will be used solely in Alaska.
As noted in W.A.K.E.'s Five Year Impact Report, Campers caught over 400 salmon on the Chitina River at the Fishing Camp while proxy fishing for elderly and disabled individuals in the Anchorage and Mat-Su communities. This is one example of the programs impact on the community, while providing mentorship and fostering community involvement for youth.
The organization received the 2023 Anchorage Chamber of Commerce gold Pan Award for Small Business Community Service.
Anchorage East Rotarians will work with W.A.K.E. volunteers on repairing equipment and assisting in the purchase of replacement equipment when needed.
