Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Cassia County, Idaho

Total Budget: $3,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: School Supplies for Students from Low Income Families in Cassia County Idaho

Since 2019, the Burley Rotary Club has supported local schools by providing essential school supplies to students who need them most. Many children in our community lack access to basic items such as backpacks, pencils, paper, crayons, markers, and headphones. By supplying the Cassia County School District with a variety of educational materials, the Burley Rotary Club helps ensure that every student has the tools they need to learn, participate fully with their peers, and maintain their dignity in the classroom.

This project is thoughtfully managed by Burley Rotary Club members, who work closely with Cassia County School administrators to identify the most pressing needs among students from low-income families. Club members coordinate the ordering and delivery of supplies, which are then distributed by school staff as specific needs arise throughout the year. In total, club members dedicate 30-40 hours to ordering and delivering supplies to the six elementary schools in the district, demonstrating their ongoing commitment to supporting local students and fostering educational success for all.

School supplies have grown increasingly expensive with backpacks now costing $25 each. The club supplies backpacks and other supplies approximately by student population. The supplies are provided as a resource bank for the school to give out as needed during the school year. The total benefit may exceed the number of backpacks supplied because the needed resource might be supplies other than a backpack. If the measure is by backpacks alone, at least 50 students are directly benefitted, but if fundraising exceeds expectations, more students can receive resources.

Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)

The remaining $1,750 will be spent on school supplies. We coordinate with the schools to identify the most pressing needs. Usually the biggest items missing are headphones. We can usually find inexpensive pairs for $5 to $10. Every student needs these now for interactive learning but the school does not have the resources to provide them. We will also provide paper, pencils, trifold displays, crayons, glue and dry erase markers. At least an additional 100 students could be benefitted by these but it could be the same students who receive the backpacks. All funds will be used exclusively for school supplies and distributed as needed to students when a student needs resources. I uploaded the actual past expenses from a couple years ago. The backpacks have gone up in price so fewer will be purchased. We are trying to be flexible, but the entire funds will be spent on school supplies as it has in the last 7 years we have done this project.

Hi Rob! You should include in your narrative how many kids you plan to help and the approximate value of a backpack full of supplies. This helps justify your budget. Once you're satisfied with your application, click "start club signature process" on the administration side of the description tab. Applications must be signed by the project manager & the 2026-27 club president no later than June 1st. Thanks!

Tier 3 projects require a detailed spending plan as part of the application. Your project description mentions backpacks are $25 and can benefit 50 kids. That accounts for less than half your budget. You can prepare a spreadsheet itemizing how the rest of the money is to be spent, and upload it to the documents tab in your application. Thank you!
