Summary: Thursday afternoon Food Bag Program for Mingus Springs Charter School
Needs identified: We will be assisting in providing for a weekly food bag program for a Title 1 charter school that addresses the weekend hunger gap. 93% of students at this charter school come from low-income families. They rely on school-provided meals and face food insecurity when school is not in session. There is zero outside funding for this program. Funding comes from school and school faculty, many of which do not make a living wage teaching. Over 90% of the students receive free/reduced meals during the week at school and 40% of the students receive a weekend food bag, feeding them Thursday afternoon until Monday morning. Students often lack access to working stoves, refrigeration or adult assistance for cooking over the weekend - requiring nutritious, easy to prepare foods. Food insecurity leads to higher rates of absenteeism, stomachaches, headaches, irritability, and fatigue which causes issues in and out of the classroom.
