Project Description Country: Zimbabwe Location: Kachechete Total Budget: $7,500 Areas of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene, Community economic development Activity Type: Water: Supply/Access Summary: Connect a water well to Kachechete village, Zimbabwe, and their community garden. The village of Kachechete, Zimbabwe, had a water-producing well at the village which supplied potable drinking water and water for a drip irrigation system. The drip irrigation system made it possible for the village (350 people) to have a commercial community garden. Produce from the garden was distributed to the community but also sold at their store in Victoria Falls to provide added income to the community. Because of a severe drought, the water well went dry. Out of necessity a second water well was successfully drilled but it is 320 meters (1,050 feet) from the village. It is not practical for villagers to carry water to the village for both domestic use and for the community garden. This project will purchase and install equipment needed to pipe potable water to the village and to provide water for the drip irrigation system supporting the community garden. The original borehole and its equipment will remain as a backup source of water, when and if the water level rises sufficiently to allow its use. Villager Justin Ncube originated this project for his village and has contributed significant funds to help maintain both the community garden and the village store in Victoria Falls. The Rotary Club of Victoria Falls will continue to work with Justin and the Rotary Club of Fort Collins Breakfast to ensure funds are used responsibly.
