For many residents in urban communities, therapy and mental healthcare remain taboo. Barbers and beauticians often become the first people their clients confide in about personal struggles. Yet too often, these professionals may not recognize the signs of mental-health challenges, or they may be unaware of where to direct someone for help.
This program will provide free mental-health awareness training to barbers and beauticians in Harlem. Participants will learn how to identify common indicators of mental-health distress and how to connect clients with appropriate community resources. They will also be equipped to train other barbers and stylists, creating a sustainable, peer-led support network.
The grant will additionally fund a community "Free Haircut Day," allowing participating barbershops to put their new skills into practice while offering residents complimentary haircuts and access to information that supports both their physical appearance and overall well-being.
