There are four school districts who will be included in this project, totaling over 30 elementary schools. Each school's third graders will receive a dictionary by Christmas break for their skill learning which usually occurs in the second semester of the school year. Teachers look forward to the distribution day and the students receiving their books are excited to receive a book of their own.
1) ISD's need dictionaries for each of their third grade students by the start of the January semester. Over 3000 dictionaries will be provided.
2) Denton-Lake Cities Rotary Club will contact each school to get exact numbers of students and will coordinate with each school principal for a time to meet with students between October and December. If any schools are missed, they will be scheduled in early January. The project is scheduled to be completed by February 15, 2026 with the final report to be submitted by March 31, 2026.
3) Funds will be applied to the purchase of dictionaries and labels to go in each dictionary. Each label includes the Rotary wheel, the four-way test and a space for each student to write their name.
4) This is an "all club" project that requires over 90% participation in labeling, presentation and distribution of books in order to be successful. It also includes a local Denton non-profit who assists in storing the books and inserting labels. A sign-up sheet is circulated at Club meetings and each member is requested to participate in at least one school distribution. Team members are responsible for contacting their assigned school and coordinating with the school principal for a presentation date and time. Presentations are usually provided by two to three Club members and usually take approximately a half hour to speak to the students and distribute dictionaries, including using the four-way test as an example of how to look up words. Ideally, all of each school's third grade students will meet in a common area of the school at the same time and will all receive their dictionaries at once.
