Project Description Country: Honduras Location: La Ceiba Total Budget: $2,000 Area of Focus: Community economic development Activity Type: Community Development: General Summary: The Adelante program will directly empower women in La Ceiba to start up or expand their home-based business, increase their family income, and achieve economic independence. In conjunction with Women's Empowerment Intl. (a San Diego based nonprofit), Rotary funds will be directed to Foundacion Adelante in La Ceiba, Honduras. Adelante is a non-profit Microfinance organization with over 20 years of lending experience. Adelante will make micro loans ($200 to $2000) to Honduran women who are ready to start up or expand a home-based business. All of the women participating in the loan program will receive financial literacy training. Loans terms average 6 to 10 months. Adelante manages the revolving loan fund, such that that repaid loans are circulated to make new loans. Loan losses average 3% of total revenue, which is quite low. Financial literacy training is an essential component of the program, with both in-person training sessions and online training videos.
