Activity Type:
Community Development: Construction/Renovation
Summary: Improve living conditions for firefighters at Fire station 16, located at the top of Mt. Soledad, in La Jolla, California
Fire station 16 is the only fire station in La Jolla that has not already been remodeled. Mt. Soledad is considered one of two highest fire risk areas in the county. The current living quarters consist of three small cubicles that include very old cupboards, beds and deteriorating windows. The "doors" on these cubicles are currently folding pull back screens that latch but stop approximately 18 inches from the ceiling, providing little if any privacy or soundproofing. With these funds we hope to assist with fulfilling "Wish List" requests provided by the station (i.e. new beds, bedding, pillows) and well a construction materials. The City of San Diego will do all the construction work, but lacks funds for materials. Our club will be working with the La Jolla Sunrise Rotary, The San Diego Fire Rescue Foundation and neighboring clubs to improve the quality of life for our firefighters, a goal that includes providing adequate rest to maintain both mental and physical health in a highly stressful profession. Achieving that goal should benefit the entire community by helping insure that our first responders remain in peak condition throughout their long work shifts.
