The goal of this project is to help food insecurity students at California State University Long Beach and Long Beach City College. For many of our students, this is defined as not being confident of their next meal. When we began this project 5 years ago, food insecure students was estimated at 21% to 24% at both schools. Today, both our recent experience with COVID-19 as well as other economic issues has placed this number at closer to 40%. In addition to food insecurities, many of these students also struggle with permanent housing. These issues dramatically affect students ability to concentrate on their studies and to achieve their degrees as they are presented with these challenges for daily survival.
Rotary Long Beach will provide projects to assist with this urgent situation as determined from the schools' greatest need. For example, each school has a Food Pantry as well as regular distribution of food for students. Rotary will assist with these projects through food drives and food distribution methods several times throughout the year.
