In the current economy, many families are struggling to purchase new winter coats and sneakers for their elementary school-aged children. Many children outgrow their coats from the previous year and wear coats that are either too small or too big, or they wear none at all. Furthermore, the children wear sneakers from the previous year that are either too small or too tattered. There are major health concerns for children not having proper winter attire during the winter months in New York, especially when they are allowed to play outside during recess.
The South Shore Rotary Club would like to purchase and distribute $4,000 worth of new winter coats and sneakers to needy elementary school-aged children in Staten Island, NY. We have already compiled a list of elementary schools located in low and moderate-income areas that demonstrate a great need for these coats and sneakers, according to the school administrations.
Once the District Grant is approved, the South Shore Rotary Club will be able to purchase the $4,000 worth of winter coats and sneakers from various local and online vendors for the best value. Upon receipt of the coats and sneakers, we will host multiple events at the selected schools and also invite administrators to the South Shore Rotary's home at the Old Bermuda Inn. During these events, we will provide the coats and sneakers to administrators to distribute them to the needy elementary school-aged children prior to the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
