The mission of the San Diego Brewcycling Collaborative (a 501(c)3 nonprofit) is to empower craft beverage companies and organizations to lead the sustainability movement in their industry by offering innovative recycling solutions and educating the community on the best sustainable practices. Funds will be used for planning and coordination with a variety of craft breweries in San Diego County.
Throughout the year their actions are focused on keeping cardboard, aluminum and plastic (shrink wrap, malt bags, grain bags) materials out of landfills.
Through the Brewcycling SCRAPS brewery baling program (Single-stream Cardboard Recycled + Aluminum cans Polypropylene bags & Shrink wrap) the actions have guaranteed these commodities were sent to facilities to be recycled properly. This minimizes the potential for contamination of otherwise valuable materials and diverts additional materials that otherwise can't be accepted in curbside recycling programs. They also ensure that aluminum cans are properly sorted and recycled. Though these materials are curbside recyclable, there are risks of them ending up in landfills due to improper recycling practices and contamination.
Brewcycling's Plastic to Pavement program diverts ground plastic can holders to the MacRebur Southern California Company, where they use the small pieces along with other polymers to create an alternative to some of the fossil fuel in asphalt! Asphalt companies then purchase this alternative to fossil fuel.
