ECOLIFE is designing and building a Modular Aquaponics Response Kit (M.A.R.K.) at their Aquaponics Innovation Center in Escondido, CA in 2022. The system functions as a prototype and demonstration model for communities to witness alternative agriculture methods. The end goal of the M.A.R.K. is to provide an out-of-the-box food system for a variety of communities across the globe. The funding will enable ECOLIFE to purchase seeds, fish food, grow media, and other materials needed to maximize production in the system.
All the produce grown on the aquaponics system is donated to community partners such as Interfaith Community Services, Salvation Army Escondido, and Foundry Food Pantry. The monthly recipients include seniors, veterans, youth, people experiencing homelessness, low-income households, and individuals suffering from mental health issues. Most people benefiting from ECOLIFE's donations are considered part of the Access and Functional Needs population (AFN).
From October through May securely packed produce donations are shipped to the partner organizations, which then deliver the produce, as needed, to the clientele they directly serve.
Aquaponics is a sustainable method of food production combining aquaculture (raising aquatic animals) and hydroponics (cultivating plants in water with added nutrients). In this circulating system, nitrifying bacteria converts fish waste into a natural fertilizer for plants. Plants take up those nutrients and return clean water to the fish, creating a system of perfect harmony. Aquaponics is a valuable farming technique in areas where land and water are not plentiful. It's beneficial for everyone who wants to grow food, and it can be done just about anywhere that has access to clean water and energy.
