Summary: Micro-loans to members of 7 groups of refugees and others in Ongata Rongai town near Nairobi
The Rotary Club of Nairobi Karengata, Kenya, has identified a community need in Ongata Rongai town for micro-loans to members of groups of refugees (70%) and Kenya citizens (30%), who cannot obtain regular credit. Groups must have pre-existed for at least a year, and members must know each other well and must guarantee each other's loans. The implementing partner, Alliance for African Assistance-Kenya, will manage the project without fee. Seven groups will be selected after an interview process and will be trained to maintain business records. Loans will be made electronically (using Mpesa) from a separate bank account maintained by the implementing partner, and loan repayments will be deposited in that account. Project funds will be a "revolving fund" that will provide new loans as repayments are made. Rotary Club members will be involved in interviewing groups, providing business training, and oversight.
