San Diego Climate Action Network (SDCAN; website: sdclimatenetwork.org) is a San Diego County non-partisan non-profit that links together people and organizations committed to working on the issue of climate change. SDCAN facilitates resource sharing, coalition building, and public relations to amplify the climate advocacy efforts of its member organizations. Recognizing each organization's unique contributions, it seeks to discover ideal working practices between them, as well as any vital solutions that may be currently unfulfilled by existing efforts.
Its mission is to provide education and resources that enable member organizations to engage at a deeper level, supporting their focus on issues such as: environmental justice in poor, working-class neighborhoods and communities of color; creating and expanding accessible green jobs; supporting the advancement of renewable energy and emission-free transportation; and educating the general public about how our climate is changing, and how groups and individuals can help in reducing the impacts of climate change.
SDCAN has been successful in creating and maintaining an online calendar of events and a weekly email that is viewed by thousands of people in the county. This effort increases attendance at presentations, educational workshops, group meetings, and service projects that support local impacted communities.
The grant to SDCAN will empower it to expand its services in the county, including:
1. Adding comprehensive climate change resource information on its website, including profile pages for each of the groups and agencies actively working on climate issues in San Diego County.
2. Providing consistent weekly social media posts highlighting events, meetings, educational items, and news related to climate action, advocacy, and impacts in San Diego County. (This is critical because so many people in our community now get their information via social media channels.)
3. Maintaining SDCAN's important calendar of climate-connected meetings and events occurring in San Diego County and the surrounding area.
