Summary: Upgrade remote rural school in Malungon, Sarangani, Philippines
The Laginan Integrated School is located in a very rural area. Its 383 students and 19 teachers have learned in 6 temporary space or makeshift classrooms since 2011. Getting to school for many students involves 1-3 hours of trekking daily and teachers only go home on weekends. The school has no electricity or running water. Our partner, Build a School Foundation, funded four classrooms and a rain water system in 2023. A May 2024 follow-up on-the-ground needs assessment by Build a School Foundation determined there is urgent need for 4 Jr High classrooms, a basic kitchen for teachers, a toilet block, a rainwater collection system for the Sr High School, a solar system to power monitors and laptops used for instruction, and basic indoor and area lighting. The estimated overall project cost is $18,000. Build a School Foundation requires a challenge to local sources provide 50% funding or in-kind, and requests 50% ($9,000) from the Encinitas Rotary Club. The tentative time line is Construction in Sept-Nov 2024, with grand opening in Dec 2024. Club members will monitor progress through weekly updates on via email from Build A School Foundation.
