Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Chandler, Arizona

Total Budget: $2,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: Help self-contained classrooms provide for their special needs students.

What needs have been identified?

The Chandler Horizon Rotary Club (CHRC) has been working with the For Our City Chandler Operation Back to School backpack drive for over 11 years. However, there are numerous students who do not need backpacks filled with pens, pencils or papers, but rather special items like weighted vests, adaptive scissors etc. The Chandler Horizon Rotary Club would like to help the teachers at the Jr High level to see what materials are needed to give the best opportunity for the students to learn.

How will the project meet those in need?

The CHRC would love to coordinate with the self-contained classrooms in the Chandler Unified School District Jr High Schools and use the money from this grant to purchase item-items for their classrooms that would benefit their specific students. Due to the varied needs of student-classrooms, this school specific approach would allow the funds to meet the real needs of specific students.

While these youth have varied self-awareness and perception, their teachers and families will appreciate the recognition that these special students have different supply needs.

Timeline of project:

The Chandler Unified School District is on a year-round calendar, there for schools begin on 17 July 2024. However procuring the supplies for special needs students will require a longer timeline.

They should have a good idea for the supplies needed as the school year begins. We hope to get a list of needed items by the end of July 2024 and we will use the funds to purchase items by end of August 2024.

Please specify what the project funds will be used for:

Some wish list items are as follows

• Adaptive scissors

• Therapy putty, various strengths

• Auditory feedback phones

• Deep pressure vests

• Therapy brushes

• Oral motor tools

How club members will be involved:

The members would be involved by presenting the classrooms with their requested items and visiting the students who will use them.
