Summary: Recycle Regatta event to support the Kerckhoff Marine Laboratory restoration project in Corona del Mar, California, USA.
At the Recycle Regatta teams will build boats out of cardboard and plastic bottles, then see how far they can paddle out in China Cove (Newport Harbor) without sinking! All to raise money to support the restoration project at the Kerckhoff Marine Laboratory (KML) which is one of the longest running marine laboratories on the West Coast, KML remains an iconic facility with a rich history of marine science for Caltech. KML is committed to providing opportunities for education and outreach to all ages, they offer tours, workshops, speaker series, and outreach events for the local community to learn more about the world of marine science and beyond. It is crucial to educate young minds about marine science and protecting our oceans, and KML offers a fantastic platform for local schools and organizations to bring students into a hands-on learning environment. The Recycle Regatta will take place in the spring of 2025 on the beach adjacent to the Kerckhoff Marine Laboratory in Corona del Mar, California. Our members will run all aspects of the event alongside volunteers from KML and will commit to building a Newport-Balboa Rotary Club recycled boat to enter into the Regatta! Our goal is to inspire our community to work together while sharing the impact of recycling on protecting the environment and our oceans. All donations and proceeds will go to fund the Kerckhoff Marine Laboratory restoration project.
