CHARACTER COUNTS! (CC!) was an integral part of Elementary school classroom curriculum in San Clemente about 20 years ago, but the program faded out when the Rotarian who administered the program moved away. After organizing the painting of a beach bathroom mural displaying the Six Pillars of Character 20 years ago, Rotarians in San Clemente came together in 2022 to re-paint the mural alongside SCHS Interactors. This brought to question how the program was doing, which led to a discovery that the CC! program had largely faded out in our Elementary schools.
For this project, we will partner with CHARACTER COUNTS!, founded by Michael Josephson and currently operated out of The Ray Center at Drake University, to re-implement these character-building education strategies into San Clemente Elementary schools. The project beneficiaries are the entire community of students, teachers, and parents surrounding each school. The longer term goal would be to reinforce the value of the Six Pillars of Character across the wider San Clemente community.
