Identified Need:
At Mosaic in Axtell, we recognize that people with intellectual disabilities desire and deserve greater independence and closer ties to the community. Today, our individuals do not have many outdoor options at their daysite (work) location. We would love to give them a beautiful outdoor break area.
Goals & Objectives:
We are looking to turn their current outdoor daysite area into an immersive sensory garden where individuals have the opportunity to experience the garden in more ways than one.
Sensory gardens have been known to help reduce stress and anxiety, and can help with stimulating the brain. This outdoor area will be enjoyed by all individuals served in Axtell, NE currently 58 with a future goal of 48-52.
Included in the project cost:
● Wheelchair accessible pathway
● New Patio Furniture
● Sensory Garden Items
In partnership with UNK's - "The Big Event" Volunteers from UNK will help initially to clean up the current location on the Mosaic campus. Volunteers would be available to clean, repair and replant the Calah Koa Garden with funding of this project. The Calah Koa Sensory Garden will be maintained not only by staff but by individuals as well. A wheelchair accessible sensory garden will allow individuals to water, plant and contribute to the sensory garden themselves while enjoying all the benefits of the great outdoors.
