Activity Type:
Education: Literacy
Summary: This project will fill fund creating a fun space with a focus on literacy and STEM education for the children residing in the a Safehouse facility in Cheyenne, WY.
Safehouse Services in Cheyenne, Wy is excited to create a fun space with a focus on literacy and STEM education for the children residing in our shelter. Each year Safehouse provides shelter for nearly 200 children. They want to create an area where the children can experience an adventure while they learn in a stress free environment. The literacy center would have an activity center in the middle of the room with two STEM wall activity units- one small unit and one large unit. Bookshelves and STEM supplies would line the room. The area they will be using for the literacy center would also include a space designed for the moms to have a quiet space to relax from their daily stress while their children play and learn. This area would have a "comfy" feel to help with mental health. The area will have a couple of chairs, end table and reading lamp. Additionally, a computer area with a two-desk top computer with a shared printer will be available for the moms to use for job search, education, research and more. Additionally the area will need a door removed and opened up to be accessible as well as the area needs painted. The literacy center would have a county library feel but with the safety their shelter provides. Safehouse Services is more than a shelter facility. They are advocates for healthy and supportive relationships and for living situations free of violence and fear. They are educators in prevention and protection and empower individuals and families to prevail over abuse. Safehouse is a not-for-profit organization that operates a shelter, facilitates support groups and advocacy programs, assists with protection order filings, and provides 24-hour crisis care and safety planning.
Rotarians would assist in the constructions of walls, painting, designing and cleaning. 20-30 Rotarians are expected to assist with this project. Safehouse Services plans to start construction on this project in July 2024. Costs Activity Center $1500, Two Wall Units $5000, Non climbable bookshelves $500, Three "Lazyboy style" chairs $3000, Two desktop computers with printer $2300, Bookshelf $500, Three area rugs $700, Two end tables/two lamps $500, Construction $2000. Lori,
I apologize for the delay in paying your grant. For the first time we received more grant requests than DDF was available. We cannot request the DDF till the report balances. To make that happen we have decided to cut the DDF from every grant. Your DDF request of $5,000 will be reduced to $4,300.
If you have any questions please let me know.
