Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Greeley, CO

Total Budget: $5,000

Area of Focus: Maternal and child health

Activity Type: Food/Agriculture: General

Summary: This project will fund a food pantry in one of the Greeley elementary/middle schools to provide food for needy families. We hope to provide food for one school year.

Greeley-Evans School District 6 and The Success Foundation Serving Greeley-Evans School

are providing food pantries for students and families at all the schools in the school district. These pantries provide fresh, frozen and shelf-stable food and can be accessed by students and their families throughout the school year as a supplemental food source.

More than 71 percent of the students in Greeley-Evans School District 6 qualify for free and

reduced lunch, the poverty marker for school districts in Colorado. Food insecurity is a concern for many students and families in District 6. The Greeley Redeye Rotary Club toured a food pantry at Brentwood Middle School last fall, and decided they would like to sponsor a food pantry at Winograd K-8 School in District 6. So far, 21 schools have received food pantries, and 12 more, including Winograd, are slated to be installed this year.

Liz Stockham, the School Food Pantry Specialist for District 6, said both students and families at all the schools are regularly using the pantry to supplement their food supplies at home. She said older students sometimes pick up food for dinner for their younger siblings when their parents are working evening and night shifts.

The equipment for the pantry is being purchased from a grant through The Success Foundation.

Greeley-Redeye Rotary is hoping to receive a matching $2,500 grant, for a total of $5,000, to purchase food for the pantry for one year. Greeley Redeye Rotary members will volunteer to help stock the pantry once the equipment is installed.

Darcy,

I apologize for the delay in paying your grant. For the first time we received more grant requests than DDF was available. We cannot request the DDF till the report balances. To make that happen we have decided to cut the DDF from every grant. Your DDF request of $2,500 will be reduced to $2,250.

If you have any questions please let me know.
