Addressing the the growing need of food assistance and the challenges of increased food diversity needs.
The Kenai Peninsula population for the year of 2010 was 55,400. 2020 Population was 58,801. Our population in 2023 is now 61,233. The area's demographics have changed as population has increased. 5833 new residents were added from 2010 to 2023. With the cost of living increasing on everyday needs. food, utilities and housing more people find themselves needing assistance.
The Kenai Peninsula is the new home to families and individuals from Ukraine, the Orient and Latin America. According to the US Census Bureau as of 2023. 7.4% of the Kenai Peninsula residents have non-English speaking homes.
Food insecurity on the Peninsula is 11.5%, the State of Alaska percentage is 10.7. 14.4 % of Children on the peninsula suffer from food insecurity.
6 percent of adults, 8 percent of children suffer from food allergies. When we combine Cultural foods, dietary restriction, food allergies and the increase in those in need of assistance. We see growing challenges.
The Kenai Salvation Army, Family Services is addressing these challenges, by improving their food assistance program. The Rotary club of Soldotna will help convert an administrative office space into a Client Choice Food Pantry. We will be assisting with the prep and painting of merchandise racks and the food pantry space. The Rotary Club of Soldotna will be purchasing 2 of the 3 display refrigerators and 2 of the 3 display freezers.
The increase in food storage and refrigeration/freezer capacity. Helps with the growing need for food assistance on the peninsula. An added benefit. Being a community responder, for The Peninsula's Disaster Relief Response Team. This improves and strengthens their ability to respond in the event of a disaster.
The Client Choice Food Pantry can be accessed by all in need, at no charge. The clients choose food that works best for their nutritional and dietary needs. Consuming food one is allergic to, or breaking dietary restrictions can lead to health issues. When the Client chooses their food, waste is reduced. The Salvation Army Family Services purchases food from local vendors. This allows them to quickly adapt to the client's dietary needs.
With the purchase of 3 glass door display refrigerators and 3 freezers. (2 refrigerators and 2 freezers purchased through Rotary of Soldotna) The food pantry client will be able to see and select the perishables that best meet their nutritional and dietary needs. Shelf stable food, also the choice of the client. Once again giving them the opportunity to choose food that best fits their dietary and nutritional needs. Meeting the client on "where they are", listening to their needs. Demonstrates real caring. When the client feels they are valued, their self-worth and dignity are improved.
