Project Description

Country: USA

Location: La Jolla

Total Budget: $2,000

Areas of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene, Basic education and literacy, The environment

Activity Type: Health: General

Summary: 200 girls will have their menstrual needs met for 10 years with the reusable CouldYou? menstrual cup; increasing health, decreasing absenteeism and transactional sex for pads.

We want to end Period Poverty for 200 vulnerable girls in Uganda by distributing CouldYou? 100% medical grade silicone menstrual cups and providing health education. One cup is $10 and lasts 10 years. This $2000 grant will fund 200 menstrual cups and health education for 200 vulnerable girls in Uganda. This means the girls who receive a menstrual cup won't need to worry about how to access pads for a decade. At the World Health Assembly in Geneva in May, i was stated that ever since Covid, the number of girls having transactional sex for pads has increased significantly, resulting in an increase of STI/HIV, child/teen pregnancy and child/teen marriage. This project will significantly reduce the instances of transactional sex for pads, lower the rates of STIs/HIV, and decrease school absenteeism and teen pregnancies among adolescent girls in Uganda. The government of Uganda has identified the need and requested 100,000 menstrual cups. This 200 cup project is the first step in a larger project that will be done in partnership with the government of Uganda and local Rotary clubs. The timeline is 6 months. During this time the CouldYou? team in Uganda, and Rotaract and Rotary members will provide the health education and will distribute the menstrual cups and collect baseline and endline data to prove the acceptability of the cup. Current accpetability is 91-97%.
