Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Anchorage

Total Budget: $12,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Scholarship

Summary: Summary: Providing $500-$2000 academic and vocational scholarships to high school graduates

Annually Anchorage South Rotary provides Anchorage Area high school graduates with academic and vocational scholarships. Our club typically gives out scholarships to 12-14 graduates. The school we primarily support is King Tech High School. We chose King Tech High School because most of the employers in Alaska are looking to hire employees in the trades.

King Tech High School is well known in the Anchorage area for its vocational training programs as well as academic curriculum. Their curriculum includes:

Automotive

Construction Electrical

Photography, Film, Video Production

Advertising

Art & Design

Carpentry

Cosmetology

Culinary Arts

Emergency Medical Technology

Information Technology

Veterinary Assisting

Welding

We arrange with the school to pick up 30+ student portfolios and applications. Our scholarship committee reviews the student jackets and based on need, executable budget plan, personal challenges and other factors, narrows the list of applicants down to around 16-18 students. We then arrange with the school counselor to reserve a conference room at the school and establish a timeline to interview each applicant in 15-minute intervals. The interview committee typically consists of 6 or 7 Anchorage South Rotary members. After the interviews are completed, the committee reviews the Rotarian evaluations of each applicant and determines which applicants will receive a scholarship and for what amount. The amount of each scholarship will vary from $500 to $2,000. The larger scholarships are typically for academic students. The interview process takes about 6 hours.

Checks for most scholarships are issued from the Anchorage South Rotary Memorial Fund and made payable to the student's school/college of choice. The memorial fund is a 501C3 fund established around the year 2000 timeframe specifically for educational purposes.
