This proposal completely replaces our Food For Kids application (P-4693).
Our new proposal is an early literacy program, targeting and families children entering school for the first time. We propose to purchase materials for and distribute literacy kits to approximately 150 children in Darien. The age of the children would be 3, 4, or 5 year old children, depending on when they first show up in our local schools through preschool screenings, or when they enter kindergarten the first time if not a part of the preschool program. We are working in conjunction with Indian Prairie Public Library and our local elementary school districts and preschool programs to determine appropriate books, materials, and resources, as well as early literacy information for parents.
Once the materials are in hand, we would have one or more packing events where we would fill bags which would be provided to the school staff to distribute to children and families. These packing nights would involve all 26 Rotarians in our club plus 20 or so local volunteers. Our proposed budget is $12,000, of which $2,179 would come from the District grant.
