Summary: Provide food items to the pantry locations at Long Beach City College and CSULB for food insecure students
The Rotary Club of Long Beach has identified that the students at the two local colleges have between 25-35% of food insecure students. The definition of "food insecure" for these young people is they are unsure of their next meal. Our program has two parts - a Grab N' Go event where we fill string bags for students with food and hygiene items (the items most needed by students is identified by each school each school year to stay current with student needs). The second event is a drive-thru food drives to fill the pantry at each school site. Again, the items for this event are food and hygiene items, as identified by each school.
In both cases, Rotary members are involved in every aspect of the events - gathering items, ordering materials, marketing and awareness to the community and working the actual day of the events.
